Idiopathic Short Stature

What is idiopathic short stature?

Typically, the term "idiopathic short stature"—also called non-growth hormone-deficient short stature—is used to describe children or adolescents who are growing poorly, but who have no measurable abnormality in their natural levels of growth hormone.

Children diagnosed with idiopathic short stature must have other examinations that exclude other causes associated with short stature. In other words, healthcare providers must be able to rule out other conditions, such as Turner syndrome or chronic renal insufficiency, which would impair growth.
